New Neverside home page design screenshotNew Neverside home page design screenshotWritten by AbsoluteCrossOn October 30th, 2006 08:09 AM in Community News Hello everyone! After much blood, sweat, and tears (ok maybe only the tears... that Simon can be slave driver I tell ya! kidding kidding). The following is a static image sample of the design that will go into the coding phase this week (the template itself has already been largely completed by our master codesmith, Simon Lilja - I refer here to the "contents" inside the template). Additional mockups for the Studio and other sections of the site are in the works as well, but the home page is one of the most complicated, due to the amount of data we want to make available in one place. The sample is hosted on AC since the neverdev.com domain is currently protected, and goodness knows where to store random files on the current neverside.com http://www.absolutecross.com/neverdev/home-mockup.htm Though we've thought hard about the design, in terms of usability, features, aesthetics, etc - it would be our pleasure to hear and learn from your feedback and ideas. Please feel free to offer any ideas or critiques that come to mind, and we will consider them. And now, a few notes to explain some things that may not Welcome message "active community" The Learn More link The Navigate Sidebar block Studio Snapshots Layout width Additional sidebar items Tabbed content area Much more is also going on behind the scenes with our development and planning for the new Neverside, but I wanted to post this for everyone as soon as possible so you could have a look at least at some of what we're up to Anyhow, I hope you've enjoyed the preview, and if you have any ideas, comments, or critiques, we are looking forward to hearing them. Wow, Dave! That is one big switch from this style to the one in the link. I am wondering, will this be the content...as it is labeled? Like Latest News, New Articles, Member Spotlight, etc. Sorry if this has been asked already. The names are not set in stone... just needed labels to put the right sort of stuff in the right places. For instance, in my current version I'm working on I've renamed "Featured Studio Submissions" rather to "studio features". If you have suggestions on anything, I'm all ears It's not quite ready yet, and I'm not going to jump the gun and post it this time around before it's gone through some extra careful critique by the NeverDev team... but it's getting close (well, I think so anyways) so it hopefully won't be too long before I post a new and improved (again, in my opinion Well, back to work _____________________ -- Dave
I would say for the tagline, just get rid of the and, and like you said you don't need the 'graphics. audio. video. code.' in the tagline. so: Share your knowledge and for that other stuff maybe neverSide (i dunno, the name's gotta relate somehow) anyway. keep it coming. _____________________ |'Personal Growth'|'Personal Development'|
I decided I'd like to post "my" most recent version of the NS layout, as though it's far from complete, it is (in my opinion) much better than my earlier attempt (*Dave grabs digital eraser and scrubs screen trying to wipe out the old design... haha*). I went to this point with it, improved things based on the great advice here and by the team, but now several other NS team members are having a go at improving on it. No doubt some good stuff will develop through that. Some (myself included) are working on version(s) without a sidebar, and some may scrap it all and try a new direction altogether. We are considering using scripting as on uxmag.com for controlling the content layout dependent on user resolution, in leu of a fluid design (both automatic, and selectable via user preference). If you have input on that, any ideas are welcome. If you have a little advice on this design, feel free -- though please don't go all out (as I mentioned, this is "not" the final design, just where I'm at with it myself, at least in terms of the with-sidebar version). Further, more solid updates will follow, but having only the old screenshot up was causing me pain http://www.absolutecross.com/neverdev/home-mockup2.htm The middle area, as I've marked "Not Finished" is very much not finished. There's currently just "random stuff" there, in place of a more detailed and dynamic feature that a few of us are trying to think through fully before spending time designing it. Just wanted to mention that so you know why it makes no sense. Anyhow, that is all for now.... Please take this green pill to help you forget the old design _____________________ -- Dave
One sugestion on the new mockup would be to move the content areas up about 10-20px so it's more easily readible right off the bat. Another thing, The login and search function buttons imo look better capitalized as in the old mockup. As for the content area, I definately like the new version rather than the old one. _____________________
Also, I did a bit of photoshopping of what I think could fit better, but you can be the judge of that. http://www.kubedawg.com/home-mockup2.jpg _____________________
Thanks! The space near the top was left open as there will be a very nifty menu system there, which Simon is coding with a goal of making it the perfect menu from a usability standpoint The other space - probably right... a bit too much - was just going for more "openness" and breathing room (one of my pet peeves is sites that try to crowd way too much into a single pageview). The button text... a bit of a toss-up: some people are preferring it one way, some the other Again, thanks for the tips. _____________________ -- Dave
oh yes!!! Where Creativity Has No Limits! 'Latest Tutorial' would be nice in that space. Tour? of what...LOL Share your knowledge
I think it looks better. I already suggested what I thought would make it better: -Left sidebar titles darker _____________________ It needs another color in my opinions... I prefer the current design Edit: Have the first official contest on NS ever: That would be fun _____________________ "Sam says : Die!" Share your knowledge This sounds promising Lexykon! _____________________ -- Dave
I like everything except the gray text. It's incredibly faint in some areas, and I have to strain to read it. Looking good though, Dave! Good stuff, AC! |
