Hello everyone!

After much blood, sweat, and tears (ok maybe only the tears... that Simon can be slave driver I tell ya! kidding kidding). Tongue .... ah hem where was I? The time has come for our mockup/sample design of the new Neverside home/main page to make its way into the spotlight.

The following is a static image sample of the design that will go into the coding phase this week (the template itself has already been largely completed by our master codesmith, Simon Lilja - I refer here to the "contents" inside the template). Additional mockups for the Studio and other sections of the site are in the works as well, but the home page is one of the most complicated, due to the amount of data we want to make available in one place. The sample is hosted on AC since the neverdev.com domain is currently protected, and goodness knows where to store random files on the current neverside.com Wink

Though we've thought hard about the design, in terms of usability, features, aesthetics, etc - it would be our pleasure to hear and learn from your feedback and ideas. Please feel free to offer any ideas or critiques that come to mind, and we will consider them.

And now, a few notes to explain some things that may not
be clear in the static image preview:

Welcome message
The welcome message will not be displayed to registered members. Once logged in, a custom area for the user will be displayed, containing a short personal welcome, as well as a suite of tools, links, and information as a starting ground for the member's visit. Some additional or expanded content will also be displayed to make good use of the space.

"active community"
You'll notice the text stating "active community"... while that's obviously not happening at the present moment, we will be putting forth a courageous effort along with the release of the new site to make that statement true once again Smile

The Learn More link
The Learn More link is for a simple and clear multi-page tour to walk new users through all of the features of Neverside. If they haven't yet grasped the "main idea" then this is an easy/obvious place for them to turn to, instead of getting frustrated and leaving.

The Navigate Sidebar block
The Navigate block in the Sidebar is an example for local navigation within articles or tutorials (displaying only the pages of the article, and a "you-are-here" indicator to help the user understand their current location in the article). It is not to show or mirror main or sub-navigation. The links I've included in the mockup are not necessarily what will be on the home page itself, if any - these were just included to illustrate the feature.

Studio Snapshots
Studio Snapshots is a new feature which will quickly facilitate browsing, via AJAX, the latest Studio entries from anywhere on the site. Right now it's only images, but a few additional mini browsers could be added once we begin accepting audio, video, or other media types.

Layout width
The width of the new Neverside design has been increased. Our goal is to create a semi-fluid layout which will be able to "crunch" down for basic 800x600 support, but work in an ideal state for 1024x768 and above. The current template width is 890px when extended, but if you'd like to offer your opinions or research on an ideal resolution choice, please let us know.

Additional sidebar items
Additional features and content will be included in the Sidebar besides the ones shown in the sample.

Tabbed content area
The Tabbed content near the bottom of the sample will be powered by AJAX, to offer a wider variety of our latest content within a smaller amount of space. The content will continue down further than shown in the preview. The gray box around one of the links is an example of the hover state for those links.

Much more is also going on behind the scenes with our development and planning for the new Neverside, but I wanted to post this for everyone as soon as possible so you could have a look at least at some of what we're up to Smile

Anyhow, I hope you've enjoyed the preview, and if you have any ideas, comments, or critiques, we are looking forward to hearing them.

Wow, Dave! That is one big switch from this style to the one in the link.
Excellent!

I am wondering, will this be the content...as it is labeled? Like Latest News, New Articles, Member Spotlight, etc.

Sorry if this has been asked already.

The names are not set in stone... just needed labels to put the right sort of stuff in the right places. For instance, in my current version I'm working on I've renamed "Featured Studio Submissions" rather to "studio features". If you have suggestions on anything, I'm all ears Grin

It's not quite ready yet, and I'm not going to jump the gun and post it this time around before it's gone through some extra careful critique by the NeverDev team... but it's getting close (well, I think so anyways) so it hopefully won't be too long before I post a new and improved (again, in my opinion Tongue) version. If you send lots of $$$.... er just kidding - if anyone is intensely curious enough to want a sneak peak, contact me in person, and you can see it as soon as the staff does.

Well, back to work Grin

I would say for the tagline, just get rid of the and, and like you said you don't need the 'graphics. audio. video. code.' in the tagline. so:

Share your knowledge
Showcase your work
neverside

and for that other stuff maybe

neverSide
which side are you on?
graphics. audio. video. code.

(i dunno, the name's gotta relate somehow)

anyway. keep it coming.

I decided I'd like to post "my" most recent version of the NS layout, as though it's far from complete, it is (in my opinion) much better than my earlier attempt (*Dave grabs digital eraser and scrubs screen trying to wipe out the old design... haha*). Grin

I went to this point with it, improved things based on the great advice here and by the team, but now several other NS team members are having a go at improving on it. No doubt some good stuff will develop through that. Some (myself included) are working on version(s) without a sidebar, and some may scrap it all and try a new direction altogether. We are considering using scripting as on uxmag.com for controlling the content layout dependent on user resolution, in leu of a fluid design (both automatic, and selectable via user preference). If you have input on that, any ideas are welcome.

If you have a little advice on this design, feel free -- though please don't go all out (as I mentioned, this is "not" the final design, just where I'm at with it myself, at least in terms of the with-sidebar version). Further, more solid updates will follow, but having only the old screenshot up was causing me pain Tongue Please A/B it with the old design to see the changes.

http://www.absolutecross.com/neverdev/home-mockup2.htm

The middle area, as I've marked "Not Finished" is very much not finished. There's currently just "random stuff" there, in place of a more detailed and dynamic feature that a few of us are trying to think through fully before spending time designing it. Just wanted to mention that so you know why it makes no sense.

Anyhow, that is all for now.... Please take this green pill to help you forget the old design Whistle

One sugestion on the new mockup would be to move the content areas up about 10-20px so it's more easily readible right off the bat. Another thing, The login and search function buttons imo look better capitalized as in the old mockup. As for the content area, I definately like the new version rather than the old one.

Also, I did a bit of photoshopping of what I think could fit better, but you can be the judge of that.

Thanks!

The space near the top was left open as there will be a very nifty menu system there, which Simon is coding with a goal of making it the perfect menu from a usability standpoint Grin (he's shown me the raw samples, and it's quite cool... changing in ways to best inform the user about the current page's relationship to the site structure). I shoulda mentioned the menu before, but I forgot.

The other space - probably right... a bit too much - was just going for more "openness" and breathing room (one of my pet peeves is sites that try to crowd way too much into a single pageview).

The button text... a bit of a toss-up: some people are preferring it one way, some the other Tongue The look aside, the reason I did it was it felt more consistent with the other text/tabs/buttons on the site, but as always - open to suggestions. Additional opinions on that in particular anyone?

Again, thanks for the tips.

oh yes!!!
mock up 2 is a way cleaner layout with better linages. the roundness of of old is passe'.
and i seen the same layout on some other site.
as i looked at the old i too thought about that big spaces in the header & footer areas.
for topics: basically what you will be offering. links to the main pages of the topics.
don't need much more, really.
is that an idea of what you'll be offering thou?
blogs, news letter, popular discussions, giveaways, video, audio, etc.
boy are you in for a treat.
I hope you have your licenses & insurances....LOL

Where Creativity Has No Limits!

'Latest Tutorial' would be nice in that space.

I think it looks better. I already suggested what I thought would make it better:

-Left sidebar titles darker
-"Join Now" and type buttoms to be darker and maybe the blue color. Because I don't notice them and if we're trying to make anything stand out...it should be the Join Now button, right?

It needs another color in my opinions...
Or at least more variation...
Too much whiter/grey/blue if you ask me...
It looks too much like a bunch of other sites...

I prefer the current design Sad

Edit: Have the first official contest on NS ever:
"Design the new NS!!!"

That would be fun Smile

This sounds promising Lexykon! Grin As (I think) I mentioned earlier, the word "work" didn't feel right to me and I've been looking for alternatives. Creativity may be it. If I use it, I'll be sure to send you a NS t-shirt when we make them.
And of course, if you have other ideas.... Grin

I like everything except the gray text. It's incredibly faint in some areas, and I have to strain to read it. Sad
